Irish model set to change

Fine Gael, almost certain to be the largest political party in the new coalition after the Feb 25 Irish general election, has come out in favour of the Dutch model of healthcare insurance, in which the provision of statutory health insurance is left in the hands of insurers. The approach promises universal healthcare, something Ireland does not have today. Both should also lead to a bigger role for the private sector.  Meanwhile, unprecedented cost increases are reshaping the insurance and private provider market, says Kevin Kinsella, head of healthcare at Mercer Ireland.
