Ambulatory surgery has been embracewd by investors in the Nordic region (see the Aleris acquisition of Proxima) but it is interesting to note how hospital operators in Germany still try to steer clear of it. A manager in one large group told us that statutory insurers are frequently and increasingly demanding to know why certain patients were treated as inpatients with long hospital stays. This is leading to many court cases.
