Millions of middle-aged women from Eastern Europe, often beyond the EU borders, are caring 24/7 for elderly individuals in Western Europe. Dr Giovani Lamura at the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research in Vienna argues that they have already had a substantial impact on the Italian care sector and that this could spread to countries, such as the UK. He points out that their arrival fits in with countries' growing predeliction to pay the elderly and their families cash, rather than provide services.
