Irish healthcare reform – clear as mud

The new coalition government’s programme promises universal healthcare by 2016. It also states that the state-owned insurer VHI will not be privatised and that private hospitals will be included in the universal healthcare scheme, but won’t be able to charge for faster access. But there is speculation that it may retreat from adopting the Dutch model in which insurers compete. We report on the reaction from private operators and insurers.
